Over the course of one or more generations, many landscapes and streetscapes have undergone significant transformations. Trees and houses have disappeared and have been built, roads have been widened, and the overall appearance and atmosphere have adapted to changing trends, as more cars have become part of the street scene and lifestyles have evolved.
In her ongoing time series project 'Travel in Time', photographer Estelle Slegers Helsen pairs old photographs and postcards with current views of the exact locations, beautifully highlighting the impact of time. Because memories shape our identities and connect us to our past, she engages with local communities and incorporates people's stories to bring the images to life.
This collection of then-and-now photographs reflects on the impermanence of the cherished locations we have visited or lived in, where we have woven our personal histories into the fabric of our lives. Observing the contrasts between the past and present deepens our appreciation for how our surroundings have evolved, fostering a connection to history that we can pass on to future generations.
